Climate

2. a)What is the climate type in Japan? How uniform is the climate across the country?
The different climate types that happen in Japan are really quite different in the fact that there are so many ranges of latitudes. Let's compare it to California again. Southern Cali is going to be completely different than northern Cali because of where the equator is and where the state is located. Well, same with Japan. According to Country Studies, Japan is mostly rainy and humid. However, Northern Japan has warm summers but really long, freezing winters and lots of snow fall. Central Japan is really hot and humid during the summer with quick winters that don't last long. Finally, southwester Japan has long, humid summers and somewhat mild winters. The location of where you are in Japan are going to be very influential on what the weather will be. Climate also consists of tropical winds, and high precipitation.
b)What is the annual range of temperature in two different cities? What is the annual range of precipitation in the two cities? How does this differ from Hawaii? Is the seasonality small or large?
I chose Hakodate and Tokyo as the two cities to analyze for annual range of temperature. According to Holiday Weather for Tokyo, the annual range of temperature is 48 degrees F, and the annual range of rainfall is 138mm. Tokyo's wettest month is June and September with 181mm of rainfall, while it's driest month is January with only 43mm of rainfall. Tokyo's hottest month is August with the average temperature of 84 degrees F, and the coldest month at 36 degrees F in January and February. According to Climate Temps for Hakodate, the annual range of temperature is 59.2 degrees F. The hottest month is also August with the temperature ranging at 77.9 degrees F, while the coolest month is January with the average temp. at 18.7 degrees F. Hakodate's annual average precipitation is 117.4mm. Hakodate's wettest month is September, with 175.9mm of rain, and their driest month is February with only 58.5mm of rain.
Comparing all of the giving information to our own climate in Honolulu, Hawaii, I looked at the information provided by U.S. Climate Data. I found that the average annual temp. for Hawaii is only 21 degrees F, because the hottest month average temp is 89 degrees F, and the coldest month average temp is 68 degrees F which doesn't give a huge range of temperature and no where near as large of a range as Japan. The precipitation annual range is 140mm. The wettest month being December with  271 mm and the driest month being May with only 131 mm of rain. Comparing this to Japan, we have just slightly a lower range of precipitation than Japan, but we definitely get more precipitation on average.
Looking back on the average temperatures for the months in Tokyo, Japan, they have more of a range in seasons than we do. They have more hot summers and cold winters with snow. Here in Hawaii, we don't have much range and much change between seasons. However, in Japan you have humid hot summers and then a steep decline to cold snowy winters.
